Yay, I traveled to another country!
I pretty much spent the first two months of my time here really getting to know England. It's been amazing but it was finally time to do a little bit of that traveling I had been so keen on when I got here and we picked Lucerne, Switzerland! Why Switzerland, you might ask? This was a long weekend trip and while other, more popular cities require more time to see all the sights, Lucerne was easy to experience in three days because all you had to do was look around to see the beautiful scenery it's known for. (hellooo, Swiss Alps!)
Firstly, I'll say that flying into the country and getting from the airport to the train to the bus to our flat was surprisingly easy. Although all the German signs and such can throw you off, the Swiss people are incredibly helpful and we found the trip to be smooth sailing. It was gorgeous from the start, the mountains are pretty much in sight from everywhere, and the view from our flat alone was enough to make us happy!
My favorite thing we did the whole trip, and maybe one of my favorite things ever, was taking a ride to the top of Mount Pilatus, 7,000 ft up, and looking out over the clouds. All I could see for miles were clouds, snow covered mountain peaks and sunlight. When the clouds cleared up, we could see the city and Lake Lucerne below and, not to get too sappy on you, it was one of the most breathtaking and memorable experiences I have ever had. I loved how cold and fresh air was (and believe me, it was windy) and it was all topped off when I had a cup of Swiss hot chocolate on top of a mountain. Um, bucket list.. check. We took a cable car back down which was awesome, pretty and slightly scary.
Besides exploring the city of Lucerne, which is adorable and great (and full of swans?) we also took a cruise on Lake Lucerne. I can say from experience that the country of Switzerland is beautiful from on top of a mountain or on the water. Everything looked like a post card and, even though I wanted to constantly take pictures to capture how pretty it all was, I made sure to put down my camera and just look as much as I could.
Switzerland wasn't on the top of my list for countries to visit but I am so, so happy I did! I'd love to go back and take family and friends so they can experience it for themselves. The trip was also a success because I went with 3 girls who have become my best friends here and we had a blast. We spent most of the trip laughing WITH each other or AT each other and enjoying some good cheese and wine.
Look at me, traveling the world and stumbling my way through this master's course! Who says I have to have it all together right now, anyway? Until next time!
